Introduction:
The Chickasha Community Foundation seeks to commission an artist for a community affiliated painting project; artist must be familiar with realism, ability to create illusions of light, and comfortable on a large-scale. Preference will be given to those with experience in painting sculptural elements.
Theme:
The committee has fabricated an outdoor, large-scale sculptural leg lamp, resembling the prop from a Christmas Story as an homage to James Noland (1953-2014), artist and resident of Chickasha, Oklahoma. Artists must consider durability of paint, weather, amendable to ongoing maintenance.
The selected artist must apply a UV resistant sealant to the finished project.
Project Location:
The project will take place at the entrance to a public park in downtown Chickasha, Oklahoma. Downtown Chickasha is a developing hub for businesses, artists, and tourism.
The Chickasha Community Foundation in a collaboration with the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, the Chickasha Economic Development Council and the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce is building a new Downtown Park. The CCF is leasing almost 8 acres at the end of Chickasha avenue and will build the park in multiple phases as it raises the funds privately. Phase 1 will consist of the USAO Arts Plaza, remodeling a historic building into restrooms and building a 40 foot permanent Leg Lamp that will pay tribute to a long time Chickasha resident that claims to have invented the prop that was used in the movie “A Christmas Story.” Phase 1 is schedule to be complete in time for the 2022 holiday season.
Phase 2 of the park will include other amenities like walking and jogging trails, an amphitheater, skate park, food truck area and other memorials to notable people with ties to Chickasha that broke down gender and racial barriers. This multimillion-dollar undertaking will be a true gathering place for locals to enjoy as well as become an iconic destination for tourists.
Installation:
The Owner will review and inspect the design during the installation. During these reviews, the committee will consult with the artist on design where applicable. There are optional approaches to on-site painting or studio, if applicable, and provided transportation. The schedule for painting work is tentatively set to begin late August 2022 and fully completed in October 2022. The final schedule will be coordinated with the Owner and selected artist.
Budget:
Please include a detailed budget with balanced expenses and income listing. The budget does not need to include equipment (cherry picker, installation, etc) which is provided by the Owner.
Transportation and hotel for artist are not provided and need to be reflected in budget. Transportation of sculptural items to and from studio to location are to be provided by others and do not need to be listed.
